Repertoire

Each music composition is presented with  a visual art piece, developing its own dramaturgy and aesthetic independent of the others.

ECLIPSE

Composer: Marcos Fernández
Visual Artist: Guillermo Laporta, video mapping

In this piece, commissioned at the CreArtBox residency program, music and projected images were created at the same time. The composer and visual artist worked together in this work inspired by the music of Mike Oldfield’s Tubular Bells while the video is inspired by DJ Amon Tobin’s visual projections. Despite the absence of a specific narrative, this piece has a clear musical leitmotif (represented by single white lines in the video) that evolves throughout the entire length of piece.

SLEEPERS AWAKE

Composer: Joshua Penman
Visual Artist: Toby Heifetz, painter

CreArtBox commissioned this choreography based on the contrary symmetry of the human figures in the Toby Heifetz’s painting entitled Sleepers Awake. The fusion of the three elements dance-music-painting walk in one direction to convey and evoke a state of levitation.

Visuality is conceived as an infinite work of art, where every production incorporates new commissions to the repertoire of the show.

LIPSTICK

Composer: Jacob Ter Veldhuis
Visual Artist: Guillermo Laporta, video mapping

This work presents a roundtrip journey from visual art to music. Jacob Ter Veldhuis wrote the music inspired by the mobile sculptures of Naom Ben-Jakov, and later, Guillermo Laporta brings back a new visual interpretation of the music through video.

PETROUSHKATES

Composer: Joan Tower
Visual Artist: Bo Juhl Nielsen, animation

This piece is the result of a creative evolution that began in 1910 with the commission to Igor Stravinsky of the ballet Petrushka. Then in 1980, the American composer Joan Tower Petroushkates wrote a work based on the original version of Stravinsky, but with a new narrative and structure. CreArtBox reimagines this work by presenting a short animation entitled “Under the Fold” by Danish director Bo Juhl Nielsen.

COMING TOGETHER

Composer: Frederic Rzewski

CreArtBox uses augmented reality to transmit the present circumstances behind this piece written by the American composer Frederic Rzewski. It is based on a letter that Samuel Joseph Melville wrote from prison in Attica in New York a few months before he was executed in the riots of 1971, where about 1,000 prisoners rebelled and took control of the prison to demand better living conditions.

VOICE OF THE WHALE

Composer: George Crumb

The music of Voice of the Whale is inspired by the singing of the humpback whale. For this piece, the video is projected directly onto the musicians themselves. Using the form of Voice of the Whale is a simple three-part design, consisting of a prologue, a set of variations named after the geological eras, and an epilogue.

PIANO TRIO

Composer: Claude Debussy

This piece is based on the music of Claude Debussy, Piano Trio in G Major. Claude Debussy is known as one of the greatest composers of incidental music. CreArtBox commissioned the choreography to Moreglyn Tebern Yard combining theatrical elements to transport the viewer into the world of dreams.

THE OLD CASTLE

Composer: Modest Mussorgsky
Visual Artist: Samuel Krichmar, illustrator
Choreographer: Yung Li

Mussorgsky wanted to “draw in music” the paintings of Hartmann. Most of these pictures were lost. In 2012, CreArtBox commissioned two new paintings and two choreographies for two movements of this music as a result of a creative residency at The Field Arts space in New York. The old castle and the rich and the poor.

SAMUEL GOLDENBERG AND SCHMUŸLE

Composer: Modest Mussorgsky
Visual Artist: Julia Griffin, painter
Choreographer: Eve Chang

Following the series of Pictures and Exhibitions, a second painting was commissioned to Julia Griffin for this piece. Based on this new painting and the music, Eve Chang developed a choreography where the rich woman is inside the painting and the poor woman is the dancer.
